The name STUPPLES and its variants: Stupple, Stuppell, Stuppels etc is an ancient name synonymous with the county of Kent in England - and more particularly with the Isle of Thanet.
My mother was a Stupples and my grandfather always told me that there was a belief handed down in the family that the name is Viking in origin. I have no proof but I like to believe it! I do believe that the surname has its origins firmly in Kent, contrary to all the name-derivation experts who insist that it comes from 'stumbles' or 'tree-stump'.
I quite simply believe it comes from the name of Thanet's famous river - The Stour. Seems obvious that it is a corruption of 'Stour People'!
I have carried out extensive, and costly!, research over many years and have decided now to release the bulk of my research to those who are interested in the name, Kent and Thanet. Along the way I hope to pick up a few more Stupples cousins throughout the world.
Included in this site are search facilities for all Stupples I have in my database, giving forenames; birth and baptism details, marriage details, death dates and children. It is also possible to look up children of on the male lines.
Have a look also at the links to Ramsgate and Broadstairs images on a sister site. Many of these are my own creation and are available for sale. My wife and I lived in Eagle House on the beach at Broadstairs before we retired to Australia. Although there for only a few years it was an honour to return briefly to the home of my forebears.
I am indebted to Brother's Keeper for providing my genealogical software. After testing all the others I still think it is the best. (download here).
I would love to hear from anyone who has a relationship to the Stupples line or can add to or correct any of the information on this site. Email me here
